Early Man emerged from Africa around 100 000 years ago and gradually spread into Europe, Asia and the Americas. This was mostly done on foot. We will follow early explorers crossing the Pacific Ocean in stages from about 3000 BC onwards to far-flung islands, like Tonga, Samoa and Easter Island and learn how they found their way in mid-ocean and the boats they used. We will then look at other sea-trading societies like the Phoenicians, the Minoans, Egyptians and Carthaginians. We will follow a Greek explorer around Britain and the arctic circle in 320 BC, briefly discuss the Vikings and conclude with the voyages of the famous Chinese sea admiral Zheng He in the early 1400s and his treasure ships.
