Ancient History Revived Walking the Roman Walls of Colchester
Come and witness the historic event in Colchester, The Walking of the Roman Walls, associate Colchester Watch and the Mayor of Colchester.
Every year, on the vigil of St. John the Baptist (23rd June or thereabouts), the Mayor of Colchester is invited to take a perambulation of the city (town) walls, accompanied by the Watch, the mayor's civic bodyguard. This is a custom from the time of King Henry III, who commanded that watches be kept in cities and towns to preserve the peace of the realm.
Walking the Roman Walls, Start at 12pm at Balkerne Gate wear the Watch, swear the Oath to the Mayor and Colchester.
The Walk will then start from 12.15 from the Balkerne Gate, Distance approx 2.5 miles, time approx 2hrs with a drink break for refreshments. So if you are interested in joining us.
Please contact Events Co-ordinator Craig 07809 157349 or email [email protected].
