About this Event
Unlike Western choral music, Ukrainian polyphony embraces dissonance, drone, and asymmetry. Rooted in seasonal rites, these ancient songs are not arranged but felt, improvised within tradition, passed down by ear from one generation to the next. They are heritage made sound – living memories in voice.
KOLO, meaning “circle” in Ukrainian, was formed in New Westminster, BC in late 2022 and has since blossomed into an ensemble of over 20 passionate singers.
At Kolo, we believe that tradition lives through living people. That’s why you’ll hear not only songs in their original form, but also modern interpretations, unexpected harmonies, and groovy, tribal beats.
Our songs tell stories of resilience, strength, beauty, hope, and belonging – echoing from the Ukrainian countryside to the heart of Vancouver.
This concert unfolds in two parts: a vibrant mosaic of traditional songs – from playful to profound – followed by the warm, ancient glow of Ukrainian Christmas carols.
Join us for an evening of captivating musical journey – raw, earthy, and deeply embodied.
All are welcome! No knowledge of Ukrainian is needed to be moved.
The concert is organized with the support of the nonprofit Maple Hope Foundation.
All proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales will go toward supporting Ukraine.
