About this Event
Join us for an afternoon of creative delight making your own musical instrument: a traditional Northern Thai bamboo flute known as the Khlui (ขลุ่ย). We’ll guide you in each step, using simple tools and natural materials to create your own personal flute!
Even if you’ve never made anything, nor played a single note before, this space is ready for you to have fun and explore!
The Khlui is an easy-to-play, joyful-sounding flute, found in all regions of Thailand. You’ll learn about the history and ancestry of the Khlui Peun Muang (ขลุ่ยพื้นเมือง). Using traditional practices and simple techniques, no glues, rulers, or calculations will be required. Connect with your own creative ancestry as you make music from living materials and your own sacred breath.
We'll start with a delicious Thai vegan lunch. At the close of the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to learn a simple Thai song on your brand new flute! This workshop is perfect for music enthusiasts, crafters, and anyone looking to connect with Thai culture and ancestral arts. We'll be using sharp knives, and hot metal rods, so this is likely appropriate for folks ages 18+. See you there!
