International Bharatanatyam exponent Christopher Gurusamy presents a stunning choreography that blends Hindu philosophy, Indian poetry, Carnatic music, and Western pop culture to trace the path of joy. Performed by one of Bharatanatyam’s foremost international exponents, Christopher Gurusamy, ‘Ānanda’ is a journey through the diverse repertoire of the famed South Indian dance form, manifested through a contemporary Australian approach. In Sanskrit, ‘Ānanda’ refers to a place in which one finds bliss. Drawing from Hindu philosophy, Indian poetry, Carnatic music, Western pop culture and the human experience, this globally acclaimed choreography traverses the many shades of the joy as found in and expressed through Bharatanatyam. From fast-paced movements set against complex time structures, to the bliss attained through devotion, or the sensuous expressions of a lover’s yearning – Gurusamy’s stunning presentation takes his audience through the ebb and flow of an ocean of human emotions. Performed in Sydney and Melbourne, it has received staggering adulation as well as critical acclaim for its captivating combination of rhythm, melody, movements that celebrate dance as a universal path towards joy. Born and raised in Perth, Australia, Christopher Gurusamy moved to India at the age of 18, and is the first Australian to study at the renowned dance and arts institution Kalakshetra. He performs annually during Chennai’s ‘December Season’ for prestigious venues like the Madras Music Academy, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha, and others. He is the recipient of Narasimhachari Dance Award, has been named the Best Dancer of 2017 (New York Times), and was conferred the Kalavahini Fellowship for Choreography by leading dancer Malavika Sarukkai.
