ANAM Recital: Ciara Wrede | Memories in Music
Advertisement
"This recital is built around the simple idea of music holding onto a memory. At times imperfectly, in fragments, or even more vividly than the moment itself. Across four very different works,
I hope to use the horn's unique voice to capture these various memories. Firstly, Gordon Jacob's vibrant Concerto for Horn and Strings, written for the legendary horn player Dennis Brain. Followed by Charles Koechlin's Quatre Petites Pièces: small sketches remembering his own student years at the Paris Conservatoire. Next, the Australian premiere of Sina Karachiani's Stranger of Kin, an intimate, reminiscent portrait of his grandmother’s journey with Alzheimer's. And finally, a horn arrangement of the third movement of Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in G minor, dedicated to his close friend.
What I love most about this program is how differently each composer has chosen to capture memory in their music, whether it be looking outward to the people they loved or looking inward to who they once were. Preparing these works side by side has meant learning to let the horn carry someone else's memory during performance, as much as my own." — Ciara Wrede
