About this Event

The Initiative for Analyzing Post-Soviet Reform Proposals, led by Davis Center visiting scholar Irina Busygina, enters its second year. It examines and compares current institutional reforms and reform proposals advanced by ruling elites, opposition groups, and external actors in former Soviet republics, applying a specially developed matrix. Last year, the initiative presented three case studies of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Moldova. You can watch the recording here.

This year, the initiative's research team will present their first round of key findings — on Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. In this seminar, presenters will share the findings of a comparative analysis of the main goals of reforms, the role of the Soviet legacy, the role of external factors, and the cleavages between conservative and reformist elites in the selected cases. The discussion will focus on the approaches taken by reformers in various post-Soviet countries: what they focus on and why, and what they leave out.
