One of the best ways to study and learn from architecture precedents is through observation and drawing in the field, in direct contact with original models. This course will consist of first a lecture covering the history and examples of and approach to architect’s field drawings as a methodology for the study of buildings and then the application of those methods to complete three types of field drawings (Measured, Analytical, and Perspective) of the Boulder Carnegie Library (1906).

The Boulder Carnegie Library, now known as the Carnegie Library for Local History, was designed by Thomas MacLaren and opened in 1907. MacLaren was born in Scotland and trained at the Royal Academy of London and South Kensington School of Art at Edinburgh before moving to Colorado Springs in 1894. The library is one of the 2,509 Carnegie libraries built by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie between 1883 and 1929. The library is an excellent example of the Neoclassical Revival Style.

INSTRUCTORS:

CHRISTIAN ARNDT has enjoyed a lifelong fascination with the art of drawing to illustrate ideas. However, his architectural education has not followed a traditional path. Christian worked for a decade with several firms In between receiving both his Associate Degree in Architectural Technology from the Community College of Denver and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He cites working at Gensler Los Angeles, Michael B. Lehrer Architects, and Moule & Polyzoides Architects and Urbanists, as milestones of his career. In his participation with these firms, he was recognized with more than twenty design awards from his peers. It was while serving in the role of Executive Architect for a traditional church at his USC Alma Mater, that he first became an active member with the Southern California chapter of the ICAA. Eventually receiving chapter scholarships for the Classical Architecture Intensive in New York City and the Christopher Browne Travel Award in Paris, France. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the ICAA. Christian is a licensed Architect in Colorado and California.

GARRETT HARDEE O’NEAL grew up on her family’s cattle and timber farm in Beatrice, Alabama. After graduating from the Plan II Honors college at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, she obtained her master’s degree in architecture from the Yale School of Architecture in 2017. She worked for McAlpine House architecture firm in their Montgomery and Nashville offices. While at McAlpine, she became a member of the Southeast chapter of the ICAA. She and her husband Edward O’Neal moved to Boulder, Colorado, in the fall of 2020. In the spring of 2021, Garrett founded her own residential design firm Hardee O’Neal Design LLC. She enjoys teaching at the ICAA National Office for the winter and summer intensives and teaches at university workshops and regional intensives. She now serves as Vice President for the ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter.
