An Oral History of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, with Sita Michelle Coltrane and Brandee Younger
Sita Michelle Coltrane (vocalist, composer, philanthropist, daughter of John and Alice Coltrane) and Brandee Younger (Grammy award nominated harpist, composer and educator) come together for An Oral History of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Part conversation, part performance, the event features oral histories and biographical stories of Turiya Alice Coltrane interwoven with photo, video, audio, and live performance, bringing the stories to life.
A reception with light refreshments will follow the program. It is sponsored by the Jazz Generations Initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation and sponsored by the Jazz Foundation of America, with generous support from the Newcomb Institute, and the Newcomb Department of Music.
On January 14 & 16, Alice Coltrane will be celebrated in New Orleans with The Life, Music, and Legacy of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, a performance and multimedia series featuring renowned harpist and composer Brandee Younger and Sita Michelle Coltrane, vocalist, composer and daughter of John and Alice Coltrane. Presented by Bamboula: Jazz Studies in Motion, the series will take place at Tulane University (Jan. 14) and the New Marigny Theatre (Jan. 16).
Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda was an American jazz pianist, organist, harpist, singer, composer, swamini, and the wife of John Coltrane. Turiyasangitananda translates as the “Transcendental Lord’s highest song of bliss.” Alice Coltrane’s masterful creative works, created music that beams universal love and spirituality.
A leading voice of the harp, Brandee Younger made history at the 2022 Grammy Awards as the first black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “Beautiful Is Black.” Alice is a guiding light for Younger, who performed at Alice’s memorial in 2007, and carries on the adventurous spirit of her greatest influence.
