An Introduction to Experimenting with Natural Dyes
During this session, you will learn various techniques to extract colours from nature, including:
Dye Baths:

Together, we will create a dye bath using plants / food waste to discover the unique hues produced when heating and submerging fabric.-

Bundle Dyeing:

In this method, flowers, plants, and food waste are laid directly onto fabric, bundled, and steamed to transfer natural pigments.

Tatakizome (Flower Pounding): Experiment with this ancient Japanese art form by using a hammer to extract colour from fresh leaves and petals onto fabric and paper.
Suitable for beginners: This workshop is designed for people with little or no previous natural dyeing experience, as well as those who have tried some of the above techniques.

About the Artist:

This workshop is delivered by Claire Mellalieu , the creative force behind Three Storey Design, a brand born in Autumn 2022 on the third floor of her townhouse in Whalley Range, South Manchester. After 23 years as a clothing designer, Claire decided to embark on a new adventure. She took time away from the fast-paced fashion industry to reconnect with the world of craft, a space where she could again work with her hands and embrace the creative freedom she had missed.Inspired by nature, she loves to use traditional techniques to create vibrant colours and prints derived from botanical sources. Her interest extends beyond design, recognising the important role that nature plays in supporting our wellbeing – a value that has always been central to her life.At Three Storey Design, Claire designs, dyes, produces handcrafted products and host workshops using natural botanicals, flowers, and plants on silk and cotton fabrics. She hand-dyes and sews bespoke accessories between her home studio in Whalley Range and Studio 16 at the Manchester Craft & Design Centre.

Cost: £60 per person - includes materials and equipment use.
