About this Event
What is clowning?
What is a clown?
Do you have to be a clown for it to be clowning?
In recent years clowning has had a big resurgence on UK stages. Hugely gaining in popularity, it has also become a vital training and exploration for actors, comedians and cabaret performers alike. It can be tricky to nail down exactly what we mean by a clown, and there are many answers to the questions above to be explored, but at the heart of the clown is an essence of play and a need to make the audience laugh, by any means possible.

In this 2-hour introductory workshop, we’ll begin to explore the form, drawing on games and exercises from a variety of clown teachers and practitioners and starting to delve into what makes us each uniquely funny.

We will explore:
Releasing yourself through play
The art of non-performing
Embracing failure
Responding to and working with your audience
Finding what makes you uniquely funny

Cordelia Stevenson is an experienced facilitator, director, theatre-maker, actor and clown. As co-artistic director of the theatre company Silent Faces, she has toured the UK with their acclaimed shows Follow Suit, A Clown Show About Rain and Godot is a Woman. Cordelia has trained with clown teachers and companies including John Wright, Deanna Fleysher, Nola Rae, Göze Saner, Marjolein Baars, Holly Stoppit and Told By an Idiot. With these influences informing her own clowning practice, she is passionate about clowning as a radical and empowering form for marginalised groups and those who have historically been excluded from male-centric clown and theatre training.
