Since scoring his first touring gig out of college with Grammy winning singer Diane Schuur, multi-talented saxophonist and vocalist Patrick Lamb has impacted literally hundreds of thousands of lives while enjoying a whirlwind dual career as an artist and sideman. While spending years on the road (both in the U.S. and internationally) with pop and contemporary jazz greats Bobby Caldwell, Gino Vannelli and Jeff Lorber Fusion, he has also become a successful solo recording artist, with five albums and three Top 5 hits on the Billboard chart.

His latest release Soul Ties (2018) featured the Top 20 single “Homebrew” which currently has over 300,000 streams on Spotify; “Tailgate” from the same collection has over 420,000 streams. His 2016 track “Limitless” has nearly 600,000 streams. His 2013 single “Maceo!” (a tribute to Maceo Parker) from his album It’s All Right Now hit #2 on Billboard.

The Mississippi born, Portland based musician also has the unique distinction of being one of the youngest artists ever inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, and his adopted hometown has celebrated him with the Independent Spirit Award. Testament to his stylistic diversity as a player and artist, he has won three Muddy Awards for his blues playing by the Northwest music community and he was a finalist in the Rockstar Mix It Up contest. Patrick’s production company was given the Spirit of Portland and the Caring Heart Award for his contributions giving back to the community. Earlier in his career, he also had the opportunity to perform at The White House.

Never one to rest of on his laurels, Patrick is a visionary creative by nature, driven by his philosophy of “taking your tests and making them your testimony.” Building on his years of success as a sideman and popular recording artist, he’s currently in launch mode with his latest musical venture – a dynamic writing and recording partnership with legendary guitarist Michael Thompson called The Thompson/Lamb Project. One of the most recorded musicians of all time, Thompson has played on hits by Celine Dion, Babyface, Whitney Houston, Eric Clapton, Quincy Jones, Shania Twain, Michael Jackson, NSYNC, Phil Collins, Madonna, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey and hundreds of others. Patrick has been friends with Thompson since they met at the Java Jazz Festival, playing songs commissioned for the President of Indonesia with Jeff Lorber Fusion.

The perfect antidote for these anxious and uncertain times, their soon to be released debut single “Cocoa Butter,” is a soulful, playfully grooving, tropically tinged delight featuring greats like John Robinson (drums), Philippe Saisse (keys) and Nathan East (bass). Patrick says, “With this new project we are working on, we want to take you away from all this to a nice beachy island.”

During the time of coronavirus quarantine, Patrick has been engaging his fans around the world with a “music share” session from his home studio at 7 p.m. PST nightly. In addition to playing familiar songs and his many solo hits, he is showcasing fresh material and has invited guests like Diane Schuur and fellow saxophonist/producer Darren Rahn to participate via Zoom. He has had over 200,000 people log on to check it out.

Growing up, Patrick’s family moved 12 times by the time he was 13, and he was always the late-enrolling new kid in town and had few friends so music became a necessary companion and a source of great solace. Born in Jackson, MS, they moved to various places in Mississippi and Georgia and to Jacksonville, FL and Austin TX before settling in Portland. Taught at Cedar Park Middle School by the same beginning band teacher that trumpet great Chris Botti had, Patrick first tried the clarinet before gravitating towards the saxophone at 14. While the other kids were listening to pop and rock, Patrick was immersed in playing at church, practicing Charlie Parker solos and transcribing arrangements by Hank Mobley and The Crusaders. His dad was a science teacher by trade, but also played piano in Mississippi honkytonks and helped his son cultivate his love for all types of music by exposing him to artists like Ray Charles, Phoebe Snow and the Crusaders.

After high school, Patrick received a scholarship to Mt. Hood Community College, where he studied under Dave Barduhn, who once arranged for Stan Kenton. The notoriety he gained throughout Portland’s music community participating in jam sessions throughout his teens led to his first paid gigs – and ultimately to his association with Diane Schuur, with whom he toured on and off for seven years.

As his career evolved, Patrick cultivated a deep sense of civic responsibility and an ongoing desire to give back to his community. He has performed for numerous fundraisers to raise consciousness about the loss of funding for the arts in public schools. He has been involved with major civic efforts to raise money for the America Diabetes Association, Oregon Food Bank, the American Cancer Society, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, The Christie School, ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington. For the last decade, he has also headed up all musical events for the Children’s Cancer Association, helping raise over $10 million for their innovative programs that enhance the mental and emotional well-being of pediatric patients via the healing power of music, friendship and nature.

“When I look back on my life, there are elements of it and things I’ve been able to do that have given it great meaning,” Patrick says. “I’ve been blessed with opportunities not only to work with some of the greatest people, musical and otherwise, on the planet, but also to help people through these great charitable organizations. I’ve overcome so many personal challenges in my life and created a beautiful testimony through the vehicle of music.”
