One night full of high-impact, exhilarating free jazz.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since 2018, Space is the Place and BIMHUIS organise progressive programs of adventurous jazz and improvised music. Under the guises of Interplanetary & Intergalactic Nights we present spectacular evenings full of genre-hopping and boundary-crossing acts, with acts from our vibrant local scene as well as international artists. For the new edition we host no less than six acts who improvise with both instruments and electronics. Often they draw from their backgrounds in jazz.
Saint Abdullah & Jason Nazary
When Saint Abdullah crossed paths with jazz drummer Jason Nazary, the connection was immediate. Drawn to the Tehran-born brothers’ boundary-pushing sound, Nazary reached out. The three soon realized they were Brooklyn neighbours. What began as open-ended improvisation quickly evolved into a sound where thunderous percussion collides with samples of Sufi-inspired vocals, fractured electronics, and glitch-inflected modular synthesis. In a live setting, their music remains fluid and unpredictable, moving between free-flowing meditation and high-impact sonic assault, like last fall’s performance at the festival Le Guess Who? For this concert, Jason Nazary and Mohammad Mehrabani will perform as a duo.
12 Tribes of Mars
12 Tribes of Mars invites listeners to leave Earth behind and step into a future imagined through rhythm, movement, and sound. Rooted in the foundations of reggae, ska, and dub, the project pushes these traditions far beyond their familiar shapes, infusing them with free improvisation, electronics, and an unfiltered experimental spirit. Their music is simultaneously raw and sensual, gritty yet irresistibly danceable. Formed by a group of jazz-trained musicians, the project has since carved out a strong presence across festivals and alternative venues. Live performances unfold as intense, psychedelic journeys that double as sweat-soaked dance rituals, leaving audiences suspended somewhere between the dancefloor and deep listening.
Neon River
Drawing subtle parallels to artists like Aphex Twin, Floating Points, or Flying Lotus, Neon River’s sound is built on the interplay between sculpted synth lines, grounded bass, and expressive live drumming, creating textures that feel both refined and visceral. The Amsterdam-based electronic trio, with members coming from Korea, Portugal and Brussels, describe their sound as “heart touching and hard grooving.”. Open melodies float above crisp, forward-moving grooves that feel raw and constantly in motion. Shaped by their broad experience across experimental, jazz, and electronic scenes, the project distils these influences into a forward-leaning live presence.
Brandon Lopez
Brandon López is a bassist, composer, and improviser living in New York City. His work deals with finding new modalities and sonic possibilities on the double bass. Last year, he reached the top position in the Downbeat Critics Poll in the category Rising Star Bassist of the Year. Previously, he was a featured soloist at the New York Philharmonic in the premiere of Ashley Fure’s Filament. He has collaborated with an impressive list of self-styled performers, including Fred Moten, Gerald Cleaver, John Zorn, Zeena Parkins and Tyshawn Sorey. Now he will perform solo.
Margaux Oswald
Margaux Oswald is a pianist whose work moves decisively toward the edges of free improvisation. Born in Geneva with a French–Filipina background and now based in Copenhagen, she has been immersed in the piano since early childhood, developing a voice that balances precision, physicality, and risk. Her solo debut Dysphotic Zone, released on Clean Feed Records, was widely recognized. Deeply embedded in Copenhagen’s experimental scene, Oswald has been involved in a range of collaborative projects. Whether performing solo or within expanded line-ups, her music unfolds with intensity and focus. Live performances are charged, exploratory encounters where structure dissolves and reassembles in real time.
Loradeniz
Loradeniz is the alter-ego of Deniz Omeruglu, pianist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound designer, producer and DJ. With roots in classical piano and deep studies in composition and sound design, she creates music that blurs the boundaries between electronic, cinematic and experimental music. She has composed music for short films, served as music director for theatre and contemporary dance projects, and crafted soundscapes for 3D installations and exhibitions. Her performances, whether live or behind the decks, are marked by processed vocals, deeply layered melodies, jarring percussion, and hypnotic rhythms. Past performances include standout sets at Sonar, Dekmantel and De School.
