More on the Artist:
Nolan McKelvey:
How Small We Are
Nolan McKelvey is proud to release How Small We Are, his 22nd release as a Songwriter. This album is the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2023 album, Forward.
Forward received dozens of glowing reviews from Europe, and Nolan continues to partner with Hemifran for European distribution. How Small We Are builds on the momentum of Forward about which Americana Highways wrote, “His voice is inspired and his reliance on poignancy is admirable.” Rootstime “compared him to singer-songwriters such as David Gray, Ryan Adams, and Damien Rice.” Blaskans Vanner stated, “Somehow these songs glide away towards the forest and meadows of beauty.” Since the release of Forward, Nolan was recognized as one of 15 distinguished artists from the Lansing, Michigan area by his hometown paper, the Lansing State Journal. He’s been dubbed, “Central to the [Boston] roots-rock revival” by WBUR Radio, “Flagstaff’s Poet Laureate,” and “One of the best songwriters in the southwest” by FlagLive. At home, Phoenix New Times called his music “relaxing” and “wistful” with an emphasis on the lyrics and songwriting. Nolan has performed and recorded with a multitude of esteemed musicians as a bass player and harmony singer including Levon Helm (The Band), Dana Colley (Morph*ne), Jesse Valenzuela (Gin Blossoms), Mark Zubia (Pistoleros), Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Bow Thayer, and many more.
How Small We Are was recorded at the Tone Kitchen in Tempe, Arizona and includes appearances from some of the most talented musicians in the Phoenix area including Jesse Valenzuela (Gin Blossoms), Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case, Old 97’s, Sunpunchers), PH Naffah (Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers), Jeff Lusby-Breault (Enormodome), Nick Sterling (Wyves), and Stephanie Groot (Mark Zubia Trio, Dusty Ramblers Project). Nolan imported old friend Mandy Fer (Sway Wild) for the vocal duet “Anam Cara”, and longtime friend and former bandmate Tim Kelly (The Benders, The Resophonics) to play dobro. McKelvey played upright and electric bass, acoustic guitar, and performed all lead and harmony vocals on the record. Nolan’s writing is honest, emotive, poignant, and hopeful. McKelvey believes How Small We Are is his best work yet, and we hope you concur.
Pilcrowe:
Pilcrowe is part of a musical continuum that began more than a decade ago between drummer Andrew Lauher and guitarist Ryan Heinsius. For years they had collaborated in other northern Arizona projects like Crow Wing and the Voluntary String Band, fusing folk-influenced songwriting with the electrified punch of Americana-rock. That continues with Pilcrowe, which has remained a steadfast focus of the duo as they create thoughtful, personal music that reflects the richness and depth of the Colorado Plateau and the greater Southwest.
The members of Pilcrowe, each longtime music veterans, have developed a singular style through hard-won live performance and a gritty, workmanlike devotion to songcraft and sonic adventurism. As a result, they’ve carved out a role as a mainstay in the region’s diverse music scene.
Pilcrowe’s latest album, "These Badlands" is set to be released on their own Woody Mountain Records Aug. 29, 2025. Its nine songs tell the stories of people experiencing harsh conditions—of the environment, the mind, or the world at large—and the resilience and hope that flows from facing down the most imposing of moments. Recorded and produced in Flagstaff over the course of more than a year, “These Badlands” features a mix of acoustic and Americana sounds alongside hard-edged, electric guitar- driven oblivion, lush vocal harmonies, and unexpected rhythmic escapes.
Check out “These Badlands,” along with Pilcrowe’s 2023 album “West of Center” and “The Big Burn” EP on all major streaming services.
