Olympic track and field gold medalist Alexis Holmes, a native of Hamden, Conn., returns home with her medal from the Paris 2024 Olympics and sits down for a public conversation at Southern Connecticut State University’s Lyman Center on the evening of October 30.
A hometown hero with track and field in her family history, Holmes got her start running track with the New Haven Age Group Track Club, which was founded by James Barber, longtime head coach of the Southern women’s indoor and outdoor track teams. Barber coached Holmes’ mother, Dawn Stanton, ’90, MS ’97, when she was a NCAA Division II student athlete at Southern. Stanton was a four-time All-American as a member of the women’s indoor and outdoor track and field squads at Southern and is honored in the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
At the Paris games last August, Holmes advanced to the final of the 400-meter dash, finishing sixth in a personal best of 49.77, before being selected to run the anchor leg on Team USA’s women’s 4x400-meter relay. Her team, which included U.S. superstars Sydney McLaughlin-Leverone, Gabby Thomas, and Shamier Little, won the gold medal and broke a 36-year-old American record anchored by the late Florence Griffith-Joyner.
Earlier in 2024, Holmes won the USA Track & Field national indoor title in the 400, with a championship record time of 50.34, and in August 2023, she was selected for the American team for the 2023 World Athletics Championships, where she competed in the mixed 4x400-meter relay and won a gold medal as the USA team set a new world record time of 3:08.80.
At the October 30 event at SCSU, Holmes will talk about her experiences in track and field and the Olympics, her fashion and style, and her boundless future.
