The Bay County Library System is happy to announce a special spring author event featuring acclaimed novelist, memoirist, and playwright Monica Wood. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the historic State Theatre in Bay City. Admission is completely free and open to the public, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Friends of the Bay County Library System.
Monica Wood, a celebrated literary voice and the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Sara Josepha Hale Award, is known for her deeply moving and masterfully crafted works. Her most recent novel, How to Read a Book, is a national bestseller that explores themes of redemption, unlikely friendships, and the transformative power of sharing stories. Another of her acclaimed works, The One-in-a-Million Boy, has been published in 22 languages across 30 countries and has earned numerous accolades, including the Nautilus Award (Gold) and the New England Society Book Award.
Wood’s memoir, When We Were the Kennedys, is a New England bestseller that won the May Sarton Memoir Award, while her novel Any Bitter Thing was an American Booksellers Association bestseller. Her body of work includes novels, memoirs, widely anthologized short stories that earned a Pushcart Prize, and plays such as Papermaker, the bestselling production in Portland Stage history, and The Half-Light, which premiered to critical acclaim. Her nonfiction has appeared in Oprah Magazine, The New York Times, and Parade.
In addition to her celebrated novels, memoirs, and plays, Monica Wood is also a respected resource for fiction writers, offering guidance and inspiration through her nonfiction works. Her book Description provides practical advice on crafting vivid and compelling imagery, helping writers bring their stories to life. She is also the author of the popular writing guides The Pocket Muse: Ideas and Inspirations for Writing and its follow-up, The Pocket Muse: Endless Inspiration. Both editions of The Pocket Muse are treasured by writers for their imaginative prompts, thought-provoking advice, and creative exercises designed to spark ideas and overcome writer’s block. These works showcase Monica’s deep understanding of the writing process and her commitment to nurturing the next generation of storytellers.
The evening will feature an author talk where Monica will share insights into her life, career, and creative process. Following the talk, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a live Q&A session and meet Monica during a book signing.
The event is free to attend, and no tickets are required. For more information, please visit the Bay County Library System’s website at https://www.baycountylibrary.org/event/evening-monica-wood-86530 or contact the library at 989-894-2837.
