Chapters Bookstore is delighted to host bestselling UK author Melinda Salisbury in celebrating her highly anticipated new YA folk horror Local Gods. Melinda will be joined in conversation by Courtney Smyth, Deirdre Sullivan, and Dave Rudden to discuss horror, folklore, and darkness in YA.
Melinda Salisbury is the four-time Carnegie nominated and bestselling author of multiple teen and young adult novels, including the Sin Eater's Daughter series, Hold Back the Tide, and Her Dark Wings, a Guardian Children's Book of the Year 2022 and a Reading Agency Book of the Year 2022 pick. Her debut teen novel, EchoStar, a tech thriller aimed at 12–14-year-olds, was published in March 2024 by Barrington Stoke, with AdelAIDE following in August 2024 and The Foundation in January 2025. In summer 2026 her next YA novel, Local Gods, will publish in the UK by David Fickling Books, and in the US by Sarah Barley Books.
Courtney Smyth is a caffeine fiend, one web search away from their newest fixation and, most relevantly, a writer of stories. Their work has also appeared in anthologies Into Chaos and The Last Five Minutes of a Storm, and in Paper Lanterns Literary Journal. They have been writing about ghosts, demons and murders since they were ten and have no plans to stop. They are from Dublin, currently living and writing in Ireland with their partner, two criminal cats and their pet corn snake, Steve.
Deirdre Sullivan is a writer and teacher from Galway. She has written seven acclaimed books for young adults, including Savage Her Reply, Perfectly Preventable Deaths and Tangleweed and Brine. She was the recipient of the CBI Book of the Year Award in 2018 and the An Post Irish Book Award for YA in 2020. Her short fiction has appeared in Banshee and The Dublin Review. She lives in Dublin. Dave Rudden is the author of multiple award-winning series for adults and young people, including Knights of the Borrowed Dark and Tales of Darkisle, as well as extensive work for stage and screen.
