PROGRAM-
Bowser Mound, a Houston Area Cultural Treasure, and a Southwestern Outpost of Eastern Woodlands Culture
Bowser Mound, 4 miles west of Fulshear, is the oldest manmade structure in the Houston region. It was used as a cemetery from about 3500 to 1600 years ago by people of the Late Archaic Lower Brazos Culture, who lived along the Lower Brazos and Colorado Rivers and their coastal deltas. They lived off shellfish and fish from the coast, and from bison and pecans from the interior prairies. Their burial artifacts define a culture that obtained copper from Lake Superior, ritual ‘boatstones’ from the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, and chert knives for bison skinning from central Texas. In turn, they supplied ornaments made from marine shells as far inland as the Ohio Valley, the Great Lakes, and southern Canada. Their far-travelled trade routes appear to have resulted from spiritual travelers who brought sacred gifts from afar. The Bowser Mound is currently threatened by rampant urban development, and a group has been formed to help save this important piece of Houston’s history.
