Vietnamese poet and novelist Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai has captivated readers around the world with her award-winning historical novels “The Mountains Sing” and “Dust Child,” among 12 books of prose and poetry she has published.A passionate advocate for the rights of disadvantaged groups, Quế Mai’s writing has won numerous awards around the world and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
On this evening, she will talk about her process of fictionalising Vietnamese history and culture in her writing, the inspirations for her novels, her exhaustive research methods and much more. There will also be a Q&A session.
Born and raised in Vietnam, Quế Mai has lived in various countries in Europe and in Asia. She has a PhD in creative writing from the UK's Lancaster University. She is the peace ambassador for PeaceTree Vietnam, an organisation that works to remove unexploded bombs in the country, author advocate for Room to Read, an organisation that aims to erase global illiteracy and promotes girls’ education, and ambassador for ShelterBox Bookclub, a UK charity book club which funds emergency shelter for families across the world after disasters. She was named by Forbes Vietnam as one of 20 inspiring Vietnamese women of 2021.
