How do we continue to live in a broken world? In this talk, anthropologist Anna Tsing will discuss the ‘Patchy Anthropocene’ with Nuria Ribas Costa. This is a world of fragmented landscapes, shaped by extraction, capitalist logic and ecological crises. Simultaneously, humans and non-human actors are developing new forms of coexistence in these damaged environments.
The evening is organised in collaboration with De Dépendance, the Rotterdam-based nomadic platform for public debate, which focuses on the major themes of our time.
Prior to the discussion, the exhibition FUNGI: Anarchist Designers, curated by Anna Tsing and architect and artist Feifei Zhou, will be open to the public for free from 17:00. The exhibition showcases fungi as radical designers in a world beyond human control.
About Anna Tsing
Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing is a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Aarhus University. She is known for her interdisciplinary work on globalisation, the environment and the Anthropocene. Her most important books include In the Realm of the Diamond Queen: Marginality in an Out-of-the-Way Place, Friction: An Ethnography of Global Connection, and The Mushroom at the End of the World, which have had a significant impact on anthropology, ecology, and environmental studies.
