AN EVENING WITH ANGIE BOWIE – Reading Poetry, Lyrics and Book Excerpts + Conversation
Please join us for a special evening with glam rock icon and author Angie Bowie , reading poetry, lyrics and book excerpts and in conversation onstage at PRS with avant-garde singer-songwriter Azalia Snail! Plus: piano stylings by Dan West and musical punctuation by Chick Cashman!
Angie Bowie is a writer, raconteur, entertainer, style icon, and producer. Her cosmopolitan perspective was ensured by her birth place, the island of Cyprus in 1949, and the places she has lived, which include Switzerland, America, and England. Alongside her ex-husband David Bowie, she influenced glam rock culture and the fashion of the 1970s, while also marketing him to super stardom. She was married to him from 1970 until 1980.
Angie has authored seven books to date: the autobiographical volumes ‘Free Spirit,’ ‘Bisexuality: A Pocket Guide,’ ‘Backstage Passes: Life on the Wild Side with David Bowie’, ‘Cat’Astrophe,’ ‘Lipstick Legends,’ ‘Fancy Footwork,’ (a book of Angie’s poetry and lyrics illustrated) and ‘POP.SEX,’ Angie’s historical opus of sexuality throughout time and places. Her candor, wit, brilliance, and humor is a force of nature, and her multi media performances are not to be missed. https://angiebowie.net
Azalia Snail is an American avant-garde singer-songwriter and musician. She is a multi-instrumentalist active in neo-psychedelia,psychedelic folkand indie rock, playing a prominent role in the 1990s lo-fi music scene, and was dubbed the "Queen of Lo-Fi.” She is one half of the pop duo LoveyDove with Dan West, and half of the free jazz duo Snail Meets West.
Snail has released 15 albums between 1990 and 2024 and has written film scores for several indie features and short films. She has toured the United States, Europe and Australasia.
In 2000, she won the Los Angeles LA Weekly Music Award for Best New-Genre/Uncategorizable Artist. Her latest album is POWERLOVER, an instrumental volume which explores the feeling of "impending doom" while perpetuating hope and joy. It’s a reaction to a world gone topsy turvy initially by a worldwide pandemic, and which continues on as humans must deal with the threat of potentially alienating factors such as AI, and the increasingly competitive nature of modern society, useless and violent manmade wars, not to mention the looming climate war.
“One of our greatest heroes, then and now. She has heroic status in the eyes of the E6. She is a singular creative influence on us, on our scene, and generation.” ~ Robert Schneider, Apples in Stereo
“Wig-sporting, cosmetic-caked Chick Cashman saunters onto the Club Congress stage with the Countrypolitans looking like a cross between some Warhol Superstar and Ziggy-era Mick Ronson and a teenage transvestite hooker swathed in mom's scarves, cologne and the aura of the back room of Max's Kansas City. Cashman's porcelain skin, snake hips and low-slung Gibson suggest a childhood adoration of rock 'n' roll guitar heroes, but his band plays a tipple-laced clamor that shows a satiric worldliness by successfully melding surf with smoky jazz, and blues with hints of glam. All under the pretext of some burlesque theory that says anything can happen -- a tradition that says what excitement there is rests as much in throwaway moments as it does in its rehearsed passages.” – from the Phoenix New Times.
Dan West (aka d’Animal) is a multi instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and arranger. His music has garnered high praise, with critics quoted as saying his music is "innocent, psychedelic, poetic and highly addictive.” “A fun-loving fusion of the best parts of Blur , Tame Impala , and Beck all rolled into one free-spirited sound from the depths of the human heart." His latest album “Hedonistic Pillow” is a psychedelic, melodic platter of infectious pop. He also is a virtuoso jazz, classical and big band composer and player.
