About this Event

We are delighted to welcome award-winning author, Ali Smith to Waterstones Nottingham for a very special event to celebrate the release of her new book, Gliff.

The first of two novels, Gliff, which is a Scottish/northern word for a shock, a fright, a transient moment, a glance or sudden glimpse, will be followed by a second novel in 2025, called Glyph (a signifying mark – as in ‘hieroglyph’). Glyph, the second novel, will tell a story which is hidden in the first so the two books will belong together but can be read independently.

The two books will form a new step in Ali’s writing journey, different in form and feeling from the Seasonal Quartet (plus Companion piece) and will look very different too. Ali always keeps her novels under wraps until they are finished, and the surprise of reading a book only when it is complete, knowing almost nothing of its content, is part of the magic.

Ali will talk about her new book before an audience Q&A and book signing.

Described by the author Sebastian Barry as ‘Scotland’s Nobel Laureate-in-waiting’, Ali Smith is one of Britain’s foremost contemporary novelists. A pioneer of innovative, narratively experimental fiction, she began her career with the short story collection Free Love and Other Stories. Since then her work has ranged widely and experimentally, garnering numerous awards and prize nominations. Her books include: Hotel World, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize (now the Women's Prize for Fiction), The Accidental, shortlisted for the Man Booker and the Orange Prize, Girl Meets Boy (part of the Canongate Myths series), There But For The, and How to Be Both, which won the Baileys Prize, the Goldsmiths Prize and the Costa Novel Award and was shortlisted for the Man Booker and the Folio Prize. Smith’s latest project is a “seasonal quartet” of novels beginning with the Booker Prize-shortlisted novel Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer.
