Cineworks and Beau Photo are proud to present 𝗔𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲-𝗛𝗮𝘆𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, a free artist’s talk and presentation by acclaimed Vancouver-based photographer Alex Waterhouse-Hayward.
Across a decades-spanning career, Waterhouse-Hayward has photographed major figures in film, music, literature, and the arts, including Martin Scorsese, Leonard Cohen, Werner Herzog, and many others. He was also a vital chronicler of Vancouver’s nightlife boom in the 1990s, capturing the people, energy, and cultural spaces that helped define the era.
This special presentation will look back on Waterhouse-Hayward’s life and artistic career, from his childhood in Argentina and his youth and early adulthood in Mexico, to his move to Vancouver in the 1970s, where he continues to live, work, and find inspiration through his connection with new generations of creatives.
For this event, Beau Photo’s mystery film bags will also return for purchase, featuring film stocks selected to reflect aspects of Waterhouse-Hayward’s life and work.
This event will be of particular interest to emerging and seasoned photographers, as well as anyone with a love of photography, portraiture, and Vancouver’s cultural history.

Photographer, Writer, Artist
My birth in a Buenos Aires hospital was recorded with a burst of a photographer's magnesium flash in 1942. I knew then that one day I would become a photographer.
I taught algebra and ancient and medieval history in a Mexico City high school until 1975 when I moved to Vancouver with my Canadian wife Rosemary and two Mexican-born daughters.
I started as a stills photographer shooting CBC drama and variety shows. But magazines were my real love. Since the late 70s I have shot for almost every magazine and newspaper in Canada, Time, New York Times, Vanity Fair, Stern, the Guardian, Globe & Mail and many more. In Vancouver I shoot regularly for the arts section of the Georgia Straight weekly, for annual reports, campaign posters for both the Federal and Provincial NDP, etc. In 2001 Canada Post issued four rose stamps that I photographed. I am also a gardener specializing in old roses and hostas.
I started exhibiting my fine arts photography at local galleries at the end of the 90s and I have shown at the Simon Patrich Gallery, the Exposure Gallery and the Presentation House. I frequently contribute photography essays for online arts magazines like Vancouver's the Tyee and Montreal's Arts and Opinion.
