An Evening of Sholem Aleichem

New York, NY — June 1st at 12pm and June 2nd at 6 pm - A unique theatrical event entitled An Evening of Sholem Aleichem, is coming to Manhattan to benefit The Bethal Foundation for Brain Health (insert a hyperlink). Known for creating modern archetypes, Sholem Aleichem tapped into Eastern European culture, creating the beloved fictional character Tevye the Dairyman. First appearing in a series of short stories, the Tevye character went on to serve as the narrator and protagonist of the iconic musical and film Fiddler on the Roof.

Pamela Conford, MSW, Bethal Founder and Executive Director, states, “I loved this show when I first saw it 40 years ago and celebrate it even more now! These will be meaningful and uplifting theatrical experiences for our times that celebrate both heritage and storytelling.”

Suitable for children, adults and people of all religions, this play will bring to life the remarkable story, humor, and cultural impact of one of the most beloved figures in literature. Murray Horwitz, co-creator of the Tony Award-winning musical Ain't Misbehavin’ as well as the NPR show Wait Wait - Don’t Tell Me, has great experience in jazz and Yiddish literature. He has performed in theatre, TV, and radio. Horowitz also captures Aleichem’s spirit, wit, and humanity as he guides audiences through the writer’s upbringing in poverty under the Russian Empire, his publishing successes, financial reversals, and staunch advocacy for the Yiddish language.

The Bethal Foundation for Brain Health is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization whose mission is to support brain health organizations that provide direct services to people in their communities. Brain health conditions include strokes, epilepsy, depression, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, muscular dystrophy, migraines, and inflammatory bowel disease.
