Matthew Shepard was a young college student who was brutally beaten because of his sexual orientation and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. His death became a defining moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, ultimately leading to the 2009 passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. His parents, Dennis and Judy, went on to found the Matthew Shepard Foundation with a mission to replace hate with understanding and acceptance. Considering Matthew Shepard honors his story through the healing power of music towards peace, understanding, and forgiveness.
The evening will open with performances from our Cherub, Children's, and Youth Choirs, sharing their own musical selections. The Combined Adult Choirs will follow with excerpts from Considering Matthew Shepard, a modern choral oratorio by Craig Hella Johnson.
