An evening dedicated to nature writing, writing prompts & practices, and sharing.
About this Event

Writing asks us to call upon our inner observer, our inner story-teller, and our inner poet to deepen our relationship with ourselves, the earth, and our loved ones. On Tuesday, April 19th, we will be meeting outside for an evening of nature writing, practices, and sharing.

In the wake of everyday life, it’s easy to shove our inner poet aside to keep moving onward in our fast-paced society. It is easy to surpass an inspired thought we've had and forget to translate our poetry onto paper.

This evening we will slow down in a structured space and work through several writing practices. These practices are an opportunity to write, find inspiration by our natural surroundings, and explore our relationship with nature.

In other words, come prepared to write!

We will be meeting along the upper path near the bike racks at Spiral Beach.

What to expect for the evening:

- several writing practices and prompts

- structure and time to write

- discussions about writing and nature

- time to share some of your crafted writing pieces (optional)

- spend time in nature

This workshop is for both beginner and seasoned writers who:

- love and care about nature

- want to learn new ways to express your connection and/or love for nature

- want to finesse and practice your writing skills

- challenge and expand your writing with lively metaphors and similes

- to learn more about creative writing and poetry related to eco-literature

What you'll need:

- Journaling tools (pen & paper)

- Warm clothes (please dress for our unpredictable Victoria weather!)

- A mug

- If needed or desired, something to sit on (camping chair, mat, blanket etc.)

About the facilitator:

Hi! I'm Alexandra Mehl, but most people just call me Ally!

I fell in love with literature at a young age. I spent much of my childhood immersed in worlds with mermaids, fairies, and magical forests. In my teens, I spent hours creating these worlds with the written word.

I was exposed, early on, to artifacts, family heirlooms, and stories that sparked my imagination and longing to learn of stories that every individual holds most dear to them.

I followed my love for literature and story to the University of Victoria in Humanities and Professional Writing in publishing and journalism.

Writing, for me, has been one of the greatest tools in deepening my relationship with myself, the earth, and the people around me. This is what I hope I can pass along to you in our evening of eco-poetry workshop.

I'm so excited to get earthy with our writing, to get connective with our writing, to get metaphorically, messy, poetic, and everything in between. See you soon!
