About this Event

"In C" by American composer Terry Riley, is a landmark work in the development of minimalism. The piece is 'open score,' meaning that it can be played by any combination of instruments. Each performer plays a repeating pattern of 53 musical phrases in a loose, improvised sequence. The result is a shifting, kaleidoscopic soundscape that evolves over time, with different instruments coming in and out of prominence as the performers make their way through the phrases. The use of repetitive patterns and improvisation allows for endless possibilities in interpretation and performance, making each staging of the piece one of a kind.

The Players:

  • Cassandra Gunn, flute
  • Gabriella Beltran, oboe
  • Cristian Barazal, clarinet
  • Matthew Dutczak, bassoon
  • Caitlynn Sandberg, french horn
