📚 Talk: "An Atheist and a Christian Walk Into a Bar... Neither One Wants the State Picking Your Kid's Religion."

🎤 Speakers: Dr. Wil Jeudy, M.D. and Amy Slaughter, Attorney at Law

****************************

Texas just voted to require Bible passages as part of the reading list for more than 5 million public school students, starting in 2030. The rollout is staggered, so there's a real window before it takes effect, and what happens between now and then is still being decided.

Christian Nationalism has been building in Texas for years. This talk breaks down what it actually is, why it matters, and how the new Bible curriculum mandate fits into that bigger picture.

Wil Jeudy is an atheist. Amy Slaughter is a Christian. They don't share the same faith, but they've reached the same conclusion: the government doesn't get to pick your kid's religion.

What We'll Cover:

  • What Christian Nationalism is, and why this curriculum mandate is a clear example of it in practice
  • How the new law actually works, and where the real leverage points sit before 2030
  • The difference between organizing that actually works and activism that just feels good, plus what's legally protected when you do it
  • How school boards, elections, and legislative sessions intersect with a law that hasn't started yet
  • Concrete steps you can take now, not just this election cycle

This isn't a talk about how bad things are. It's a talk about the parts of this you can still change, and how.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Dr. Wil Jeudy, M.D. is an urgent care physician and the Texas State Director for American Atheists, where he chairs the Secular Advocacy Team tracking and testifying on bills in the Texas legislature. He founded Secular Houston, which organizes the secular political voice in the Houston area, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Center for Freethought Equality. He's spent years teaching people how to turn frustration into organized, effective local action.

Amy Slaughter is an attorney with over 25 years of experience. Her legal background brings a practical lens to the separation of church and state questions at the center of this issue, including the fact that the new curriculum mandate is already expected to draw a legal challenge of its own. She's also a longtime community moderator for Christians Against Christian Nationalism, a grassroots movement of Christians working against the rise of Christian Nationalism in the U.S.

*** A CAUSE CLOSE TO MY HEART ***

Curiosity Brews was launched by our very first speaker, Bridgette Mongeon — sculptor and founder of Houston Women's Hiking Group, a community of 20,000+ hikers. Hiking has personally been a lifeline for me, and Bridgette is now working on something ambitious: two life-size bronze statues honoring Emma "Grandma Gatewood," the remarkable 67-year-old grandmother who in 1955 became the first woman to solo thru-hike the entire Appalachian Trail. To honor that connection, I'm donating 5% of net proceeds from every Curiosity Brews event to this tribute. If her story moves you too, you can contribute directly at
