As part of PRS's YesterdayLA 2026 series—a month-long exploration of the people, places, and works of art that have become part of the fabric of Los Angeles history—El Cine and 7th House are proud to co-present an evening with members of the legendary East Los Angeles Chicano art collective ASCO, Willie Herrón III, Harry Gamboa Jr., and Humberto Sandoval. Through conversation, commentary, and rare materials from their personal archives, the artists will revisit Asco's irreverent and audacious work through photographs and films spanning more than five decades, including a slideshow of the collective's celebrated "No Movies," rare home movie footage with live commentary, and the world theatrical premiere of Sandoval's film SEÑOR TERESHKOVA (1974–75), newly reconstructed and completed fifty years after its making.
Emerging from East Los Angeles in the early 1970s, Asco transformed the streets, storefronts, vacant lots, and billboards of the city into sites of performance, intervention, and self-invention. Blending performance art, activism, satire, glamour, and experimentation, the collective confronted the social and political realities of Los Angeles while challenging prevailing representations of Chicano life through acts of artistic and cultural resistance. Best known for their celebrated "No Movies"—elaborately staged photographs masquerading as stills from films that never existed—Asco drew upon photography, film, murals, and public actions to create vibrant and urgent multimedia works unlike anything else being produced in Los Angeles at the time.
While cinema inspired much of Asco's work, the collective produced relatively few films of its own. Yet one of the group's most celebrated "No Movies," The Gores, was in fact a still from a real film—Humberto Sandoval's SEÑOR TERESHKOVA (1974–75). Long considered lost, the film existed more as legend than film. Though it had been written about as a completed work, only an unfinished eight-minute version was known to survive. Over the course of several years, Sandoval searched through archives, personal collections, and decades-old materials in an effort to reconstruct the film as originally intended.
That search led to the discovery of a VHS assembly found in Sandoval's own closet, original soundtrack recordings from 1974–75, production stills, and missing photographic sequences preserved by Harry Gamboa Jr. With the help of Gamboa Jr. and his fellow founding Asco member Willie Herrón III, Sandoval painstakingly pieced the film back together, recreating lost scenes and restoring footage that had not been seen in over fifty years. The result is the long-awaited world premiere of a film once thought lost to time.
El Cine and 7th House invite you to be among the first to experience this newly recovered chapter of Los Angeles cultural history and to celebrate Asco's singular fusion of art, activism, performance, and cinema in all its creativity, urgency, and defiant spirit.
