Description
Originating in 19th-century Britain, the Arts and Crafts movement emerged from growing concerns about industrialization and the growing separation between artists and their work. Supporters of the movement rejected mass production and the division of labor, instead championing craftsmanship, honesty in materials, and the artist’s individual hand.
As the movement spread to the United States, it evolved into distinct regional styles, with different areas emphasizing unique materials and aesthetics. Across these interpretations, Arts and Crafts designers consistently sought harmony in interiors and frequently collaborated across artistic mediums to create unified spaces.
Set in Vallejo’s only surviving Julia Morgan-designed residence, this special salon event features Dr. Kayli Rideout, Tiffany and Arts & Crafts scholar, who will discuss the movement’s origins, guiding principles, regional expressions, and the collaborative nature of Arts and Crafts interiors.
Guests will then enjoy a piano recital featuring music from the era performed by concert pianist Susan Lin, followed by a guided tour of the Julia Morgan home led by owner Michael Loughrey. The afternoon concludes with a curated wine tasting hosted by Susan Lin, who is also a Master of Wine.
