An Artist in Chinatown

"From 1976 until about 1990 I was part of the art community which grew up in Victoria’s Chinatown. A combination of the colourful streetscapes and the fascinating crew of creative people who made it their home provided me with great subject matter for my paintings and my writing in the Times-Colonist. I’ll share lots of pictures and stories to help you remember those wonderful days."

Robert Amos grew up in Toronto and discovered Victoria in 1975. His day job at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria merged nicely with the night-life in the studios of Fisgard Street. Since 1981 he has made it his goal to document Victoria, beginning with our unique Chinatown. Documenting the architecture of our town in words and pictures he has published a dozen books on the subject. In recent years he has become the official biographer of artist E. J. Hughes. Amos was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the University of Victoria. You can learn more about him at robertamos.com
