An Addicted Society

More Americans today are addicted to, and die from, illegal substances than at any time in our past. Many millions more are addicted to alcohol, to gambling, to social media, or other “process addictions” like anorexia. How do we understand the complex nature of addiction, how much of it has to do with choice and how much with genetic predisposition and circumstances? What can we do as a society to keep addiction from ruining lives and to tend to those who have fallen prey to addictive substances? This month, we’ll consider this important aspect of modern life, and examine the hope for recovery.
