In the third Oakeshott Lecture of 2026, the world-leading legal expert Professor Amy Wax will analyse the key causes of discontent among young conservatives. Following her lecture Professor Wax will be joined onstage by the eminent demographer and political scientist, Professor Eric Kaufmann, for a public discussion.
Amy Wax is a longtime tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, with one of the more unusual résumés in legal academia. She trained first as a physician (earning an MD from Harvard and practicing as a neurologist) before taking her law degree at Columbia. She went on to argue cases before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Office of the Solicitor General, and her scholarship spans social welfare law and policy and the relationship between family, work, and labor markets. A recipient of Penn's Lindback Award for distinguished teaching, she is also a prominent voice on questions of culture, meritocracy, and higher education.
Eric Kaufmann is Professor of Politics at the University of Buckingham, where he founded the Centre for Heterodox Social Science, and an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute. A political scientist specializing in national identity and political demography, he is best known for Whiteshift (2018), his influential study of how demographic change is reshaping Western politics, alongside earlier books including Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth? and The Rise and Fall of Anglo-America. His latest book is Taboo (2024), published in the US as The Third Awokening: A 12-Point Plan for Rolling Back Progressive Extremism, which argues that the roots of "woke" ideology lie in the unexamined moral taboos of progressive culture.
The event is open to everyone. Tickets are required, but free. Book yours here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2001023898346
