On the morning of 5th May 1930, a small racing green Gipsy Moth bi-plane called 'Jason' took off from Croydon Airport. The pilot was Amy Johnson. Newly qualified to fly and unknown to the world, Amy had a goal to break the record to Australia and make a name for herself in aviation. Taking off, Amy was about to experience one of the most exciting adventures of her life. She flew Jason solo, but together they met with sandstorms, monsoons, looming mountains and crossed shark infested seas.... On landing in Darwin 19 days later, Amy was an international superstar.
Born in the year the Wright Brothers made their first flight and into an age where the romantic heights of flying captured her heart, Amy Johnson became the first British woman to qualify as a ground engineer and then, in 1930, the first woman in history to fly solo from England to Australia.
Amy lived her life for adventure and the future of aviation. In January 1941, at just 37 years old, Amy was killed while serving her country on a routine flight for the Air Transport Auxiliary, after bailing out of her plane into the Thames Estuary at Herne Bay.
In her short life this ‘lone girl flier’ achieved so much while faced with challenges of all kinds.
We meet Amy in a world of memories, desires, wishes and ambitions. As we find out about her life we start to see how the pieces fit and the tools Amy used to engineer her dreams to reality....
The show is approx 1hr 10mins long followed by an interval with bar :)
The Q&A is the second half.
Tickets for this performance are £10 concessions (students, under 18 and senior citizens) and £15 standard plus booking fees.
Trinity students free with limited seating available!
This performance, is part of The Flying High Tour and the The Flying High Weekend, the 95th anniversary weekend of Amy Johnson taking off for Australia on 5th May 1930!
There will be an after-show Q&A with show creator, Jenny Lockyer, Amy Johnson researcher and historian, Jane Delamine and adventure pilot, Amanda Harrison. This will be an opportunity to see the show and then take part in a Q&A exploring aspiration and adventure....
