Learn to conduct a professional quartet! A free musical project for self-identifying female survivors aged 18+
About this Event

Who can participate?

Amplify is open to self-identifying female survivors aged 18+, including cis women, trans women and non-binary survivors who are comfortable in an environment that centres women’s experience. No previous music or conducting experience is required. An experienced support worker* will be present throughout all sessions, and travel and childcare reimbursement are available.

What will happen?

In this project, participants will work alongside Holly Mathieson and professional musicians from the Nevis Ensemble to develop musical conducting skills. Participants will choose from a selection of familiar pieces of music, arranged for string quartet, and be guided by Holly as they learn to lead the musicians. Over five sessions we will listen to the pieces, discuss our bodies and gestures as active, powerful, expressive instruments, and finally join with a small team of musicians to experience "driving" a group of musicians as a conductor. The focus is on coming to know our physical selves a little better and recognising that our bodies can be a source of empowerment and authority. This project is also about making expressive choices and about the music and ourselves.

Amplify is a partnership between the Survivor Arts Community and the Nevis Ensemble. It has been funded by Glasgow Life.
