Amphibians of the San Francisco Bay Area Workshop

Lecture: Friday, December 5, 2025 from 8:30am – 4:00pm at the Laguna Environmental Center. Field Trip to Private Preserve in Sonoma County: Saturday, December 6 or Sunday, December 7, 2025.

This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the life history, ecology, and conservation of frogs, toads, and salamanders that occur in the San Francisco Bay Area. Professional biologists and resource managers will receive practical knowledge of our local amphibians.

For each of the 16 species listed below, specific information will be provided including identification features, range and distribution, habitat requirements, and behavior. Both common and rare species will be discussed:

American Bullfrog, Arboreal Salamander, Black Salamander, California Giant Salamander, California Red-Legged Frog, California Slender Salamander, California Tiger Salamander, Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog, Northwestern Salamander, Pacific Chorus Frog, California Newt, Red-Bellied Newt, Rough-Skinned Newt, Western Spadefoot, Western Toad, Yellow-Eyed Salamander

Instructors for this workshop will be Dave Cook and Jeff Alvarez. Both are experts on amphibian ecology and conservation and conduct herpetological research in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Field Trips

The presentation group will be split into four field trips. The field trips are identical. Each field trip has a maximum of 20 participants. When registration opens, field trips can be selected by date and time:

Refund Policy

Cancellations received more than 30 days in advance of the event date will receive a refund minus a $50.00 processing fee. No refunds will be granted within 30 days of the workshop regardless of personal or professional emergency. Tickets are transferrable within your agency, if needed.
