AMOS THE KID (WINNIPEG)The release of Enough as it Was in 2023 followed the remarkable rise of Winnipeg’s Amos Nadlersmith from reclusive songwriter to hometown hero. Only a few years have passed since the not-quite-country musician was playing the odd diamond-in-the-rough set in a half-empty bar; now, he’s a stop-him-in-the-street performer playing for sold out crowds of hundreds and who released one of the “most anticipated" and "most underrated" Canadian albums of 2023”(Exclaim!).
The record saw Nadlersmith fully flesh out the corners of his sonic world; his indie-tinged-country rock is burnished for the first time by grungier undertones, somehow managing to be both incisive and feel-good—matching the energy of his live show. The music is never quite as straightforward as you'd expect, and their racaous sing-along-filled shows have become a shorthand for a great night out in Manitoba.
Enough as it Was was produced, engineered and mixed by Adam Fuhr (Yes We Mystic, Virgo Rising, Tinge), mastered by Cam Loeppky (The Weakerthans, Constantines).
THE DENIM DADDIES
Brostrom and his fellow Edmonton-based good ol’ boys who comprise The Denim Daddies—bassist/vocalist Kurtis Cockerill, pedal steel guitarist Booker Diduck, keyboardist Sahil Chugh, and drummer/vocalist Matt King—have been finding ways to satisfy the tastes of both country music purists and newbies for over five years now, burning up every stage they grace with outlaw-inspired alt-country that parties as hard as they do. With tunes about hoedowns gone right, hootenannies gone wrong, and the pain in your heart after hearing a Luke Bryan song, they’re doing it on their own terms. Several old guys once told them that their sound was reminiscent of The Flying Burrito Brothers. A man with a mullet once said they sounded like Steve Earle.
LUCAS CHAISSON
Lucas Chaisson is a performing artist, songwriter, session musician and producer based in Edmonton, AB. Lucas began performing around Western Canada as a child and released two albums to critical acclaim before his 18th birthday. Since moving to Edmonton from Cochrane, AB in 2013, Lucas has released two more well-received recordings. Telling Time (2015) was produced by Juno and Grammy Award winning producer Colin Linden at House of Blues in Nashville, TN. After the success of Telling Time, Lucas decided to take on more creative control for his 2020 release Most True Thing. This most recent recording was produced by Chaisson and recorded/mixed by Juno nominated engineer Scott Franchuk at The Audio Department in Edmonton. This collaboration produced Lucas’s most fully realized effort to date, with performances from some of Canada’s finest musicians (Joey Landreth, Grant Siemens, John Showman), as well as Lucas’s touring band.
