About this Event
Join us for a heartfelt evening celebrating the love, resilience, and truth of Trans Indian lives through storytelling, community, and film. Amma’s Pride tells the remarkable story of Srija, a trans woman from Tamil Nadu, and her mother Valli, whose courage and unconditional love led to one of India’s first legally recognized trans marriages. Their story reminds us that when a family embraces authenticity, it becomes an act of revolution, one that reverberates across generations and borders.
The evening begins with a community reception and dialogue in honor of Transgender Awareness Month, centering the voices and lived experiences of transgender women and people across the diaspora. Together, we will reflect on what it means to live authentically, to carry our heritage with pride, and to navigate identity, migration, and belonging as trans immigrants building home across continents.
Following the reception, we will screen the award-winning short documentary Amma’s Pride, a moving portrayal of a mother-daughter bond that defies social norms and redefines what family and acceptance can mean. After the screening, join us for a panel conversation with the film’s director, crew, and trans panelist leaders as they discuss family, visibility, and the growing global movement for trans inclusion and dignity.
We will then come together over South Indian delicacies, sharing food, warmth, and community in Amma’s nurturing spirit of care and connection.
As the first trans-led South Asian organization rooted in the Hijrah and Kinnar heritage, ParivarBayArea proudly carries forward the cultural and spiritual lineage of gender-diverse communities of the Indian subcontinent. This evening is not only a film screening but a tribute to the Hijrah and Kinnar foremothers whose strength, wisdom, and joy continue to guide trans Indians around the world toward belonging and believing.
RSVP Required: FREE SCREENING. SPACE IS LIMITED.
Presented by ParivarBayArea, the home of transgender, Hijrah, and Kinnar South Asian immigrants and asylees in California, with generous support from the Asian Women Giving Circle and BAVC Theater, San Francisco.
