What if horror tells us more about America than history books ever could?
We start with the film Sinners, which uses horror, the supernatural, and the fantastic to uncover the enduring legacies of America's past. Together, we'll examine how these stories confront historical violence, systemic racism, and the experiences of situations like Black boys placed in continuation schools, revealing the ways these histories continue to haunt the present.
But these stories are about more than fear. Through monsters, ghosts, and imagined worlds, Black writers and filmmakers create space for resistance, healing, and hope. Rather than looking away from difficult histories, they invite us to imagine new futures beyond them.
