In the American Holidays series, Jefferson Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Andrew Roth, continues his exploration of those things Americans love in common. In this installment, Roth explores the origins of Mothers' Day by asking what are its ancient roots, who first sponsored it in America, and convinced President Wilson to proclaim it a holiday? Lastly, how did it become so intimately associated with flowers, both red and white? Mothers' Day – an American tradition – a common object of our love.
