Topic: America will commemorate its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. For many in the Black community, however, the milestone raises a deeper question: How far have we really come? As Frederick Douglass famously asked, What, to the slave, is the Fourth of July
That question continues to challenge us as we reflect on 250 years of being Black in America. To mark this historic moment, Source Booksellers will host a conversation exploring 250 y ears of Black life in America. Together, we examine our history—not only the oppression we endured, but also the extraordinary legacy of survival, resistance, achievement, and resilience that has shaped our communities and our nation.
Detroit City Historian Jamon Jordan will lead this timely discussion, offering historical context and insight into where we have been, how far we have come, and what lessons our history holds for the future.
