Amanda Parrish Morgan presents Stroller in conversation with Diane Parrish
About this Event

Stroller blends memoir and cultural criticism to examine what this everyday object reveals about us and our views toward children and the people who care for them. Included on The Millions's Great Second Half of 2022 Book Preview, Stroller has been praised as "an immensely readable volume" and an "acute and deeply felt depiction of the pleasures, traps, thrills, and dangers of early parenthood." In The New Yorker, which listed Stroller as a Best Book of 2022, Peter C. Baker praised “the central strength of the book [as] not comprehensiveness but the way the stroller, and Morgan’s experience of her own strollering years, become an omnidirectional magnet, pulling disparate material into friendly proximity.”

Amanda Parrish Morgan is the author of STROLLER (Bloomsbury 2022) which The New Yorker named one of the best books of 2022, noting that “the central strength of the book is not comprehensiveness but the way the stroller, and Morgan’s experience of her own strollering years, become an omnidirectional magnet, pulling disparate material into friendly proximity.”

Some of Amanda’s writing has appeared in The Rumpus, LitHub, Guernica, The Millions, n+1, Electric Literature, Carve, The American Scholar, The Ploughshares Blog, JSTOR Daily, The Washington Post, Real Simple, Women’s Running and ESPNW.

Amanda lives Connecticut with her husband and two kids where she teaches at Fairfield University and the Westport Writers’ Workshop.

From before she could write a word, Diane Parrish inhabited stories of her own invention, so vivid to her that she shared one with her first-grade class as a real-life family drama. That may or may not have been the same year she also gave herself a new first name.

Once she could put crayon to paper she began recording her stories and poems. Although she always loved writing, her practical parents encouraged her to pursue a career that would result in a more reliable salary, so she made her way to law school. She practiced law for several years in Kansas City, where she met her husband and eventually began a new phase of life as a wife, mother, expat, and volunteer. She also made a clandestine return to fiction writing. When the pandemic of 2020 eliminated most viable excuses for not completing the unfinished novel lurking deep in the recesses of her computer, Diane devoted herself to the task. The result is Something Better. Her essays have appeared in The National Gardener and Calla Press Journal.

Diane lives in Connecticut with her husband and their Corgi, Finn.

A note about in person events:

We are very excited to bring authors and readers back together in our space, and we know you are too!

As we all navigate the transition back to congregating in person, we ask that you use honesty, care, and understanding in interacting with fellow event-goers, staff, and authors.

Please note that Magers & Quinn will always comply with current city and state regulations, and reserves the right to change the below policies at any time. These are guidelines only, and if you have questions about the most up to date information, you can always call us at 612-822-4611.

For information about how our in-person events work, please read on:

Q: Are masks required?

A: Masks are not required to browse in the store. However, we strongly encourage masking while seated in the event area and waiting in the signing line.

For the health and safety of others, we strongly encourage you to wear a mask or face covering, especially for longer visits to the store such as events.

Q: Are in store events free?

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Q: Do I need to RSVP?

A: Yes, please. Each event will now include a registration link.

As we navigate this step back to in-person events, we will be limiting event capacity to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees and authors. By requiring pre-registration, we can easily communicate event updates and policies with those who plan to attend, and can contact attendees after the event with follow-up information.

We strongly suggest registering via the Eventbrite link provided on our website, but if you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

We may or may not be able to accommodate unregistered walk-ins, and seating priority will always be given to registered customers. We appreciate your understanding of this process!
