COMMON conservatory is committed to building a better ecosystem to sustain and support dance artists. At the core of this mission, COMMON seeks to create an inclusive and supportive community that can enrich the lives of underrepresented and oppressed artists.
To enhance COMMON conservatory’s efforts to support dance artists, particularly those who are non-white, we are launching COMMON contribution. Initiated and taught by Alysia Johnson of Hubbard Street, all proceeds from the COMMON contribution open contemporary classes will provide free dance classes at COMMON conservatory to BIPOC dance artists.
Come move with us on June 20th and July 18th from 12-1:30 pm. Classes will be masked and socially distanced. Space is limited and only 16 spots will be available, please RSVP to reserve your spot!
If you cannot attend a COMMON contribution class, you can still support this program by making a tax-deductible donation. All donations received between June 20, 2021 - July 18, 2021 will be reserved to support BIPOC dance artists in Chicago.
About Alysia L. Johnson
Alysia L. Johnson (she/her) is a native of Dallas, Texas, and credits the beginning of her dance education to Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Academy. After her primary education with DBDT Alysia attended Booker T. Washington HSPVA under the direction of Lily Cabatu Weiss where she trained in composition, dance on camera, ballet, modern and contemporary forms. While getting her BFA at The Juilliard School in New York City, Alysia developed a skill for community engagement and received two grants to help further dance education in her hometown. Alysia curated and moderated a program with American Ballet Theater’s Misty Copeland, as well as programming the Black Student Union Events within the Juilliard Community. Since graduating, Alysia has joined the premier contemporary dance company in America, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In late 2020, Alysia became Head of Membership for Black Dance Change Makers, an online social platform helping to sustain and connect black creatives globally. As a performer, teacher, and choreographer, the thing that excites Alysia the most is seeing multi-generational exchanges of information and movement.
