About this Event
Photographer Alvin Kean Wong unveils "Roller Zoku," an exhibition that explores into Japan's rockabilly subculture. "Through his lens, Wong not only captures the essence of the Japanese subcultural movement but also challenges the stereotype that Asian cultures lack an edgy, rebellious, and dynamic spirit.
Over the past five years, Wong has cultivated a profound relationship with Japan's rockabilly community. His journey began in January 2019 when he set out to document a fading subculture. It was during this time he met Johnny Diago, a prominent figure in the Japanese rockabilly scene whose mission is to revive and pass on this distinctive culture to future generations. This encounter sparked a deep fascination with the community’s unique aesthetics and camaraderie.
In December 2019, Wong toured Canada with Johnny and his band, documenting their electrifying performances and shared experiences. This tour not only enriched his photographic repertoire but also deepened his bond with the community.
Throughout the pandemic, Wong remained connected with the rockabilly scene—dedicating his time to editing photos, that ultimately culminated in his book, "Roller Zoku." This work stands as a testament to his deep respect and affection for the individuals who welcomed him into their world.
