Registration is required and this event is limited to the Audubon Vermont Alumni Network.Audubon Vermont Alumni are invited to join the Junior Conservation Technicians (JCTs) for Birdathon! The JCTs are a part of a program which provides a paid opportunity for high school students to gain hands-on experience in the conservation field. Since January, they have been learning from, and working with, the forests that we will be birding.
For the 2024 Alumni and JCT Birdathon, Audubon Vermont alumni and the JCTs will band together to identify as many species as possible in 2.5 hours. In addition, Bird Bingo cards will be distributed before the search and the participants who return with the most Bingos at the end of the event will win special Audubon prizes. Alumni are welcome to participate the whole day (8am-3pm) or to leave after lunch (8am-12pm).
We will search high and low, possibly traversing some steep and slippery terrain in search of birds (depending on mud season). It is recommended that you bring waterproof shoes with good traction and be ready to walk up to 4 miles, with options to break or take different routes as needed by the group. Bird field guides and binoculars will be available for anyone who may need them. Merlin Bird ID is a free app that is great tool for auditory and visual bird identification, we recommend downloading it in advance of the event.
We hope this event will be a fun opportunity to return to the Green Mountain Audubon Center, connect with fellow alumni, and network with teenagers who are eager to hear about your career and education journeys.
Snacks, coffee, and light refreshments will be provided. Please pack a lunch and bring water bottle.
While dogs are allowed on-leash at the Green Mountain Audubon Center, we're kindly asking that you leave furry friends behind so they don't startle the birds we'll be looking for.
