About this Event
“Uchinaanchu” is Okinawan for “person of Okinawa.” The last great Battle of WWII was fought on Okinawa. Join storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung to hear the story of the Himeyuri, the Okinawan high school girls pressed into the Japanese Army during WWII and of how the people of Hawaii sent pigs to Okinawa after the war to help restore the culture and diet of the Okinawan people. Come and hear these little known, but true and well researched stories of survival and redemption. Learn what it means to be “Uchinaanchu.”
Japanese-Korean storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung, grew up with the superstitions and the magic of the Hawaiian Islands. He tells stories from Hawaii, Asian folktales, ghost stories, stories from the Japanese-Americans experience of WWII, the Plantation Days in Hawaii, and the immigration of the Chinese into the US.
