The Clean Energy Research Group based at SFU is releasing a new working paper that analyses Canada’s economic and climate change and finds it wanting. In the context of the US trade war threats, the group notes that little progress has been made in regard to economic diversification under the Carney Government. The group points to the continuing reliance of Canada on commodity exports, as reflected in the public investment commitments under review by the Major Projects Office. The research also points out the contradictory nature of doubling down on fossil fuels at the same time that large parts of BC and Ontario are suffering from climate-induced wildfires. As the paper notes, “this is like putting gasoline on a fire at the same time that you are trying to put it out.” Overall, the paper points to a lack of Canadian economic strategy, with major ramifications for our economic future. The paper looks to green transition and innovative sectors as major lost opportunities for public investment, that would yield more jobs and income than fossil fuels and be sustainable for future generations of Canadians. The paper will be officially release in line with CERG’s first monthly talk series, on Sept. 10, 2026.
