Join peacemakers highlighting folly of war as a solution to conflict: share poems + walk to site of Peace Tree in Princes St Gardens
About this Event

Join us for an Alternative Remembrance Event at 1:30pm Sun 9 Nov at the Quaker Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2JL.
Our theme is Opposing Wars.
Poetry from Simon Barrow - writer, poet and peace & justice campaigner.
We will also hear poems from Majk Stokes, environmentalist, poet, Quaker - he can't be with us but happy to share his poems.
There will be time to share your own reflections & poems .....
Unfortunately Protest in Harmony can't join us this year, but singers are welcome to contribute.
Book: Share the Event:
At around 2.15pm we shall set off for the site of the Peace Tree - location for the planned Opposing War Memorial in Princes St Gardens - where we shall hold a minute's silence. Sadly the tree was vandalised this summer and will be replanted this winter. Donations invited towards this.
We shall lay White Poppies* in memory of all those killed in wars - civilians, soldiers executed as “deserters” for refusing to continue to participate, as well as soldiers killed, and conscientious objectors who refused conscription.
EXTRA: All are welcome to join the Quaker Meeting for Worship at 11am - and share in a simple bowl of soup together at 12.30pm- before we start.
Proposed Timetable

11.00am Quaker Meeting for Worship followed by soup at 12.30pm - optional
1.30pm Gather in the Meeting House, for poems and songs
2.15pm Walk to the Peace Tree in West Princes St Gardens to lay wreaths
3.00pm Close
