Guest speaker: Mitsuru Izumo, Founder and President of Euglena, on developing bio-jet fuel
About this Event

Euglena Co., Ltd. is a dynamic breakaway founded in a University of Tokyo Faculty of Agriculture laboratory. In December 2005, Euglena became the first in the world to successfully mass culture its namesake organism, euglena, outdoors and make it available for commercial use. By using microalgae such as euglena, the company is developing and manufacturing factional food and cosmetics, and creating biofuels designed to reduce CO2 emissions. Euglena contains 59 types of food nutrients, including vitamins, amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids like DHA. Because euglena grows using natural processes like photosynthesis, it is garnering global attention as a greener raw material for the next generation of bio fuels.

Mitsuru Izumo is a graduate of the University of Tokyo, having specialised in agricultural structural management. In 2005, he established Euglena Co., Ltd. to harness the properties of microalgae Euglena. Euglena Co., Ltd. became the world’s first biotechnology company that succeeded in the outdoor mass cultivation of Euglena. Currently, Euglena Co., Ltd. upholds “Sustainability First” as their philosophy and has developed a manufacturing process to use Euglena in foods, cosmetics, and for biofuel.  By leveraging Euglena and other advanced technologies, the company has also established a bioinformatics division, and is involved in "social business" assisting Bangladesh farmers with mung bean production.
