Starting point : St. John's Church
The first docks in the city were moorings on the east bank of the Hooghly River, far to the north of the present Dockland. The earliest were in north central Calcutta, about three hundred years back in Dihi Kolikata and Bazar Kolikata around Lal Dighi. The active port moved south in the second half of the 20th century. We will walk down the area from St Johns Church to Bankshall Court. This was the earlier Kalikata village which clustered with Govindopur and Sutanauti villages gave birth to the city of Calcutta. It would be interesting to find out how the city evolved around the Ghats, some of which are not in existence now.
This is a curated walking tour from Kolkata Explorers. The tour will be led by Avijit Dhar Chowdhury.
